Local Area

The Olive Motel is central to Coromandel Town, only 250 metres to the BNZ corner where there are cafés, bars and shops. Walk from the motel to the Four Square supermarket. There is a local Kauri Block Pa Trackthat takes you high up on the hill with great views and takes about 50 minutes to complete when walking from the motel.

From The Olive Motel drive 5 minutes one way to Driving Creek Railway, or 15 minutes the other way to The Waterworks on the famous 309 Road. See the Kauri trees or take a plunge in the Waiau Falls while up the 309 Road.

Coromandel Town has a gold mining history. Visit the Gold Stamper Battery and the local museum.

Fishing is great round Coromandel Town. Come and hook a snapper. Bring your boat, or go out on a charter. Walk just down the road and pick up smoked fish or mussels from The Coromandel Smoking Company.

Coromandel Town has many artists inspired by the local scenery and relaxed lifestyle. There is an annual artstour with artist open homes, but many studios are open year round.

A 2-3 day stay should give you time to experience all the above. Extend your stay and take a day trip to Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove on the other side of the peninsula. NOTE Hot water beach and Cathedral Cove are on the Eastern side of the peninsula and it takes about 1.5hrs to drive there.

...Slow down, and set your clock to "Coromandel Time".
